Best Cities for US Retirees on the Pensionado Visa: Boquete, Coronado, or Panama City?
Overview of Retirement in Panama
Panama is one of the most chosen countries among retirees. A flexible retirement visa, a safe and cosmopolitan environment, and plenty of lifestyle benefits and discounts put this country at the top of the list.
This article goes through the best retirement cities: Panama City, the capital, Coronado, a beach town, and Boquete, with cooler weather and a bewildering mountain landscape.
Cost of Living in Panama
Living Comfortably for Under $2,000 a Month
Panama is a unicorn in the relocation landscape worldwide. It is right on that sweet spot between lifestyle quality and affordability. In places like New York, Miami, Paris, or Berlin, it is unthinkable to live comfortably for under $2000 a month. Let’s see about Panama.
In the country of the canal, all costs are considerably lower starting from leisure activities to tourism and health care. An American can expect to pay between USD300 and USD400 for a private medical consultation in the US, while in the country of the canal, it can cost USD 50 (with an insurance of USD50/month). Luckily, we have our Mundo expert editor to consult with since she spent quite some time living in the country of the canal and has firsthand experience. Please see her comment below.
When we say that Panama is a unicorn, we mean it's unique in various aspects. For the neighboring countries, this country is far from being cheap. For many Latin Americans, moving to the country of the canal means a huge leap forward in financial terms. Nevertheless, they find here a more stable political environment, no organized crime, and the possibility to earn money and save up in US dollars. Thus, they are avoiding volatility issues, typical of their original countries.
Mundo editor’s opinion: "This is my 8th year working as a writer and editor at Mundo, and luckily, I can back everything I've written about this country with my own experience, especially when it comes to lifestyle. I remember that I traveled to New York while living in Panama, and found that an ice cream that cost me 1.50 in Panama would cost me $4 or $5 in Coney Island. Also, I went to medical consultations regularly for follow-ups. With an insurance that cost me $50 a month, for every consultation I paid only $50. Since I come originally from Argentina, I can understand how this can be too high for Latin Americans, but for US retirees it means significant savings, and they don’t have to compromise on quality”.
Best Places for Retirees in Panama
When comparing the capital vs the provinces, the results might be surprising. Expats will find a whole different environment when stepping outside of Panama City. Here is a summary of the most representative locations across the country.
Panama City
The capital brings a cosmopolitan and vibrant experience to every expat who's been staying here, either for a few months or several years. There are plenty of leisure activities to engage in, including casinos, shopping malls, pubs, restaurants, and five-star hotels. The country's status as an international business hub has given it a high-end edge when it comes to construction, accommodation, and infrastructure. This fact is clearly reflected in the city's spectacular skyline.
It's worth noting that the Central American capital is not a beach destination. To find the beach, you have to drive for at least one hour. There are, however, coastal landscapes and ocean views like the Cinta Costera. This is a seaside walk by the Bay, beautifully decorated with palm trees, colored tiles, and ornaments. The jogging trails are ideal for exercising while enjoying the vistas.

Bocas del Toro
The archipelago of Bocas del Toro is the country's top Caribbean destination. Located near the border with Costa Rica, it’s a 1-hour flight away from the capital. Retirees find tropical attractions, a warm climate, breathtaking nature, and all combined with developed urban infrastructure. They can live in Bocas Town and take a weekend escapade to one of the nearby islands for a more rustic experience.
Boquete, in the Chiriqui Highlands
Boquete has that kind of climate that you wouldn't expect to find in the tropics (55°-77° Fahrenheit). Nestled in the highlands, in the province of Chiriqui, it lures with its green slopes and supreme coffee. There are plenty of expat communities because it offers a quiet ambiance for retirees and seniors who are looking for a laid-back lifestyle. The city of David is about 40 minutes away in case you suddenly need to reconnect with the faster pace of the city.

Vacamonte, Arraiján District
A few minutes outside the capital lies this charming fishing town. Besides having beaches and several points of interest, Vacamonte is a thriving logistics and industrial center. It’s a hub for the local industry and the exportation of shrimp and tuna. Since Panama City doesn't have a beach, places like Vacamonte or Playa Bonita become popular weekend escapades for those living in the capital.
David
David is one of the most important urban centers with 47,000 inhabitants in David and 97,000 in its metropolitan area. Retirees choose it as a valid alternative to the capital because it’s less bustling and lacks the traffic jams that the capital’s residents complain about. It's the capital of Chiriqui, the westernmost province bordering Costa Rica. Retirees who choose to live here must consider that traveling to Panama City takes 1 hour by plane and approximately 8 hours by bus.
Coronado
In 2025, over 3,000,000 tourists visited the isthmus, according to what the Authority of Tourism published on its official site. Many come for the beaches, which makes places like Coronado quite popular. This is a fully developed beach town, only 50 minutes from Panama City. In simpler words, it’s an ideal location to invest in vacation rental real estate, or for American retirees looking for an alternative to Florida.
Obtaining the Pensionado Visa through real estate
If you buy a property with a value of at least $100,000, you can apply to the Pensionado program if you also have a pension income of at least 750 dollars, and it has to be for life. Any of the above-mentioned sites would be great for retirees who could very well seize this opportunity.
Luckily, Mundo has a wide portfolio of properties for sale, especially now that we have been appointed master brokers of Mercan Group.

Healthcare in Panama
Our editor has stated (please see our editor's opinion above) that the country of the canal enjoys much lower health care costs than what you find in the US or Canada. And with this, you don't compromise on quality. There are several top medical centers, some affiliated with Johns Hopkins, all of them with state-of-the-art equipment, developed infrastructure, and comfortable waiting areas.
Obtaining a Retirement Visa in Panama
From the many visa residency options, one is specifically focused on retirees. This is the pensionado program. In essence, it grants permanent residency to applicants who have a lifetime pension of at least $1000 a month. Even though its name suggests otherwise, the program is not only for seniors. It’s not age-restricted, which makes it a unique door to enter as a permanent resident if you meet the requirements.
Dependents and other considerations
With each dependent added, the applicant needs to answer with an extra $250. This can be part of the pension income. For example, a pensioner applying with a spouse and child must have a minimum pension of at least 1,500. There are no limitations as to the spouse, however, children can only apply until the age of 25. If they are older than 18, they must be full-time students at the university.
Conclusion: Is Panama the Right Place for You?
To sum up, the beautiful isthmus welcomes everyone, from seniors looking for a more cost-effective environment, to business people who are looking for better conditions. In the process, remember that this country is much more than its capital city. So, dare to discover its beach towns, its secluded gated communities, and the hilly horizon of Chiriqui.
