Controversy has been an inevitable side of citizenship by investment programs. This initiative started with the protagonist of our article, Saint Kitts and Nevis, which now has one of the best citizenship programs in the world when it comes to reliability.

Nobody can deny the innovation that such programs brought to the table 40 years ago. They have helped people get a second, a third, or a fourth nationality through relatively simple paths.

Today, we explore the other side of the coin and what countries like the above-mentioned do to maintain the programs reputable, safe, and under impeccable integrity. If we look at the history of St Kitts as a forerunner of citizenship by investment, we can understand its present as a zealous protector.

St Kitts: History and Culture Tightly Connected to CBI

How Reputable Countries Continue to Be Reputable

Money is energy, a valuable asset, and as such, it can be misused. Out of greed, people can do anything to obtain more money, even if they have to break the law.

This kind of behavior is not absent from the CBI world, this is why reputable countries need to fight to maintain their reputation and protect their frameworks, and this is no easy task.

Five Reputable Countries Signed a MoA

Actually, this was one of the main reasons why last year the five eastern Caribbean countries with CBI signed an MOA (memorandum of agreement). These are some of the best citizenship programs in the world, and the governments intend to keep them so.

The main reason why they gathered to sign this document was to strengthen cross-border cooperation when it comes to monitoring applications, potential and approved candidates, and to establish fair thresholds for all the reputable countries involved. One year later, measures are being taken for these thoughts to be transformed into solid regulations and frameworks.

St Kitts: History And Culture of a Country Committed to Transparency

St Kitts history is closely connected to CBI because it was the first country to stipulate such a program in the 80s. Forty years later, it's one of the main pillars for maintaining reputable countries at their peaks.

The government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has been accused of cancelling granted citizenships unfairly, but the fact is that what they did, they did it to preserve the program. These benefits everyone: already approved applicants, those with ongoing processes, and future candidates. At the end of the day, irregularities can lead to a program’s cancellation. We've learned that the hard way through Cyprus in 2020.

Revoking Citizenship

Even the best citizenship programs can revoke an already granted citizenship. Moreover, revocation of citizenship doesn't only happen under the CBI framework. There are different grounds under which a government can remove citizenship, banning the person from entering the country again, or returning them to their previous immigration status.

When it comes to the Federation, St Kitts history and culture are very tied to the CBI, and the country is committed to transparency.

Best Citizenship Programs Prioritize Transparency Above All

The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis has found that 158 applicants obtained citizenship status under the officially stipulated minimum thresholds. Such a breach of the program's requirements is unacceptable and goes against the reputable countries that offer this opportunity to international investors.

Furthermore, all these individuals were notified and encouraged to show proof that their contribution was as stipulated by the law. The period to present such proof closed at the end of last year.

Although revoking citizenship is no pleasant business, it is undoubtedly necessary to protect the history of Saint Kitts as a pillar of CBI and holder of one of the best citizenship programs in the world. The country has also been going out of its way to reimburse Russian and Belarusian applicants whose applications were still in process when these countries were banned.

Brief History of St Kitts and the Best Citizenship Programs in the Caribbean

All in all, the eastern Caribbean is today one of the main citizenship by investment epicenters. Besides the Federation; Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, and Grenada offer similar programs.

In all cases, the main entry pathways are a donation to the national fund or a real estate investment. There are other less popular alternatives like government bonds in Saint Lucia, investment in businesses, or sponsorship.

Give or take, they will allow you to add your closest relatives as dependents. Their scope widens as they allow you to add more distant relatives (grandparents, in-laws, siblings with spouses, adult children, grandchildren, etc.).

The programs’ thresholds vary, but not by much, and in all cases, donation is cheaper. This is counteracted by the fact that it doesn't bring any returns. On the other hand, real estate investments can bring returns or be used as a family residence, and they can be sold after a stipulated period.
