The Caribbean has always been the
ultimate destination for people who want to secure their freedom through
citizenship by investment programs.
Known as the island of spices,
Grenada is a destination that sits right in the middle between the unexplored
and the sophisticated. In addition to a rich history, it boasts idyllic beaches,
forested mountains, crystal clear rivers, and gorgeous waterfalls.
The climate is delightfully tropical.
Almost all year round, the sun heats up to 29ºC during the day. The beaches are
just as paradisiacal as those in the rest of the Caribbean but with the added
value of coral reefs worthy of being visited by diving enthusiasts, and scenic mountainous
terrain -of volcanic origin- with attractive waterfalls and rivers flowing into
the sea.
However, its main attraction is not the
turquoise water and white sand beaches, or the cultural diversity, but the fame
of being the “island of spices” that gave it its fertile soils. If you become a
Grenada citizen, you will not be able to overlook the fragrances and flavors of
ginger, allspice, mace, and cinnamon, of which the island is a natural source.
The country is one of the largest producers of nutmeg on the planet, which
represents it so much that it’s even present on its flag.
We love Grenada for its natural wealth
and rich culture, but there is another thing that dazzles us about this island:
its citizenship by investment program. Grenada’s CBI program is one of our
favorites for many reasons, but some of the most attractive things about
becoming a citizen of the island are:
Ø
Lightning-fast processing times.
Ø
Possibility of accessing an E-2 visa to do business in
the United States.
Ø
Having English as the national language is excellent
for business.
Ø
The geography is heavenly, the volcanic soil is
fertile, and the tropical climate couldn’t be better.
Ø
It’s a couple of hours from the United States.
Ø
Access to an attractive tax regime.
Ø
The best healthcare system and the lowest crime rate
in the Caribbean.
About Grenada
The entire island is a tourist hub for
all tastes, visited by adventurers who want to explore its forests and people
who just want to enjoy its beautiful beaches. Another charming aspect of the
place is its rich history and diverse culture. Grenada is accessible from most
major U.S. airports, making the island one of the top tourist destinations for
US citizens.
Grenada is also a particularly stable
territory and - very importantly - has the lowest insecurity and crime rate in
the region and has a common law legal system with an independent judiciary.
This is what the phrase “tropical paradise” refers to.
A highly developed tourism sector
primarily drives the Grenadian economy. During the last two decades, the island
moved from an economy primarily based on the agricultural industry to a
service-based economy.
Grenada is not only inherently a free
economy but also a growing one. Since 2013 its annual growth rate has always
been over 3%.
In terms of education, Grenada has the
St. George’s University, which has over 8000 students, with a particular focus
on medical students who aspire to practice their careers in the United States.
This is because this university has links and agreements with the United States
hospital system. Moreover, your children can benefit from a 90% scholarship in
the University for undergraduate courses after one year of residence in
Grenada. This is an incredible benefit for CBI applicants as their children
will have almost direct access to the best med-schools in the US and can pursue
a career there.
This Caribbean island is also one of the
best destinations for people who care about safety, medical infrastructure, and
quality of life. Aside from the wonders we’ve mentioned, its quality of life is
one of the highest in the entire Caribbean. From its high literacy rates and
access to clean water to its very low rate of crime and insecurity, and one of
the best healthcare systems in the Caribbean, Grenada is perfect for living a
free life feeling sheltered at all times.
We know, it sounds like paradise.
Grenada is one of the most exciting
destinations for investors, and it has earned it. But that’s not all, Grenada
also has one of the most competitive citizenship by investment programs in the
world.
Deciding which citizenship by investment program is right for you can be challenging. Today there are many options, but there is one that shines in the Caribbean, and that is Grenada.
Why Grenada?
Five reasons to apply to its CBI program
No worldwide income tax
Grenada is one of those rare beauties
that applies a territorial tax system for residents. You pay income taxes in
Grenada, and that’s it. If you’re a Grenadian resident, you won’t have to pay
worldwide income tax anywhere. In fact, there are no taxes on inheritance, capital
gains, international dividends, or any income you generate outside the island.
Grenada also has double tax treaties with the US and the UK.
A privileged location that secures your real estate
investments
If you decide to invest in real estate, you’ll be
happy to know that because of the island’s southern location outside the
hurricane belt, Grenada is protected from the hurricanes that hit the other
Caribbean islands year after year, so your investment will not be affected by
these natural disasters. Moreover, the real estate business is thriving and has
some interesting ROIs, which means you’ll recover part from your investment.
Your entire family is eligible for Grenada’s CBI
program
Grenada has one of the most open CBI programs in the
world. Generally, you can only include your spouse, underage children, and
sometimes grandparents. In Grenada, you can include them, but also dependent
children up to 30 (!) years old, grandparents, and even unmarried siblings.
A first-class passport
Grenada citizenship also opens the door
to many other destinations. With a Grenadian passport, you do not need a visa
to travel to China, Russia, the United Kingdom, or the European Union. In
total, you can enter 143 countries without a visa.
The E-2 visa
The best benefit of Grenada’s CBI over the rest of the Caribbean CBI programs is that with your Grenadian citizenship, you are also eligible to apply for an E-2 visa to work and live in the United States with your family. Grenada is the only Caribbean CBI that offers this advantage.
Grenada’s CBI program
Grenada’s CBI program is drawing the
attention of financially independent persons and businesspeople of outstanding
reputation. Often, such persons are interested in a safe haven for themselves,
their families, and their businesses. They also strive to distance themselves
from any adverse events in their home countries, such as COVID-19, and
dictatorships, to scale their company for growth or change its trajectory. A
Grenadian passport offers all of the above, but it also opens even more
particularly attractive windows of opportunities.
The costs, benefits, and time involved
in obtaining a Grenadian passport are more than convenient, and best of all,
the procedure is buttery smooth.
First things first, how much does it
cost to have a Grenadian passport? Well, that depends. There are two options
for obtaining citizenship by investment on the island.
Ø
The first way to obtain a Grenadian passport is
through a non-refundable donation to the Grenada National Transformation Fund.
The minimum investment for a family of four that chooses this option is $200,000,
although if you want to obtain it only for yourself, the investment drops to $150,000.
Ø
The second way to obtain citizenship by investment in
Grenada is by investing in real estate. With this option you must pay attention
to three things:
·
The investment must be made in a government-approved
project for the CBI program.
·
The minimum investment amount is $220,000.
· The investor will be able to resell title-deeded real estate
after five years of obtaining his citizenship and passport.
In Mundo, we have access to fantastic
real estate investment opportunities with some of the top developers in
Grenada, who can also offer advice for the CBI program. All their
properties qualify for application to the program. If you want to know more,
check out our investment article.
Regarding the application process, it is
quite simple and is usually completed in around 60-90 days, which is incredibly
quick, even when compared to some Caribbean CBI programs. Let’s break it down:
Ø
The first step is a preliminary review. Choose the
type of investment for which you want to obtain Grenadian citizenship and sign
the contract with our experts.
Ø
The second step is to prepare the application case
after the contract has been signed. The due diligence check must be paid by the
applicant plus 10% of real estate costs or rotation amounts. This step can take
up to two weeks.
Ø
The third step is to submit your application and
documents to the citizenship investment agency.
Ø
The fourth step is quite simple: just drink some
Grenadian tea and wait. After you submit your application, you can wait for the
Government of Grenada’s approval, which can take about two months.
When the Government of Grenada approves
your application, you are in the final step. It is time to pay the rest of the
investment and fees. After that, the citizenship by investment agency will
issue your certificate of naturalization, and your case agent will receive your
passport on your behalf to forward it to you (or you can travel to Grenada if
you wish).
Grenada has one of the most advanced
programs in the world when it comes to obtaining citizenship by investment.
This destination attracts more investors than other Caribbean islands for
several reasons, including:
Ø
The application and processing time is lightning-fast:
you can have citizenship in just two to three months. You read that right, 60-90
days, and you will be ready to enjoy your life in a tropical paradise. Grenada’s
CBI program’s processing times are much faster than most European programs and
virtually the same as those of other Caribbean islands.
Ø
You can include your spouse, dependent children who
are up to 30 years old, and your parents or grandparents over 55 years old.
Even better, you can also add your unmarried siblings if you wish.
Ø
Grenada’s government doesn’t even require your
physical presence to apply for citizenship. Just amazing.
Ø Along with the above advantage, you’ll also like to know that citizenship by investment in Grenada does not require you to do interviews or have any particular educational or work experience.
Requirements
Aside from the above-mentioned
requirements, you must consider the following fees:
Ø
Additional dependent after the third: $25,000.
Ø
Application fee: $1,500 per person.
Ø
Due diligence fee: $5,000 per adult, none per
dependent child under 16-years-old.
Ø
Processing fee: $1,500 per person.
Also, the general requirements are
demonstrating the following:
Ø
The main applicant is at least eighteen years old.
Ø
Is in good health.
Ø
Has enough funds to make the investment.
The following documents must be
submitted with the application:
Ø
Certificate of good health
Ø
Police clearance
Ø Proof of source of funds
What makes
the Grenadian CBI program special? The American E-2 Visa
If you thought that Grenada could not be
a better choice after reading all this, you are wrong. It can be better. One of
the most compelling attractions of Grenada’s citizenship is accessing the
advantages of its treaty with the United States that makes it possible for
Grenadians to obtain E-2 visas to work and do business within the territory of
the United States.
This treaty came into force in 1983,
with Ronald Reagan as President of the United States. Every year, dozens of Grenadian
citizens are approved for this visa program. It should also be noted that
Grenada is the only country in the region to have such a treaty with the United
States.
Applications from Grenadians for the E-2
visa are processed through the American consulate in Barbados. Applicants must
be prepared to develop their ventures in the United States to apply. Generally,
this visa is granted for five years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as
the business in the United States remains in operation. However, the
application process is rigorous.
The applicant must prove his/her ties to
Grenada, so it is practically necessary to demonstrate a physical presence in
Grenada’s territory. Owning a title-deeded property showing a nexus to the
country is an advantage. It is also possible that the North American
immigration authorities may require the applicant to have some level of
proficiency in the English language to demonstrate that the person can
successfully conduct business in the United States. As for investment
requirements, there is no formal minimum specified, but most cases require a
substantial investment amount of at least $100,000.
The spouse of the E-2 applicant has open
market employment opportunity and their children (under the age of 21) are eligible
for in-state tuition, in most states. The E-2 applicant and family members can
spend as much or as little time in the US as they wish and can reside in the US
while their permanent residence (EB-5) applications are pending.
Fortunately, processing times are quite
fast. An application can take up to two months to process, which is not bad for
a gateway to doing business in the US.
If you consider the costs of obtaining Grenadian citizenship and the possibility of obtaining an E-2 visa to do business in the United States, we are talking about an investment of at least $350,000 (it’s higher if you choose the real estate path towards citizenship) and a processing period of 6-8 months. It isn’t easy to find any other citizenship by investment program that can even come close to Grenada’s. You can be doing business in the US in seven months if you start your application to the Grenadian CBI program and follow it with an E-2 visa application.
