Introduction: why investment funds became the primary Portugal Golden Visa route in 2026

Among the options for obtaining a second residency by investment, Portugal has always been a key player, and it continues to be so in 2026. However, along the way, there have been changes and adjustments as the program evolved to its current version.

A major change in Portugal was the removal of the real estate route and the full focus on investment in Portuguese businesses and contributions to local initiatives.  In this article, Mundo analyzes the Golden Visa through Portugal investment funds, their types, characteristics, minimum thresholds, and advantages.

A new beginning in October 2023: closure of the real estate route

Since the very inception of the economic citizenship concept, the real estate pathway has been one of the pillars for most programs. This applied to both residency and citizenship.

After four decades, the migration programs in 2026 are facing a whole new reality. The real estate markets have experienced enormous growth, yet investors’ interests have shifted into other sectors.

Many applicants are stepping out of the real estate option because a) it limits their range of choices to pre-approved developments or constructions in specific locations, and b) they are concerned about the negative impact on the local markets due to the overpopulation of elite construction.

Saint Kitts and Portugal find different solutions

Saint Kitts and Nevis tried to provide a solution by creating a specific program called the Public Benefit Option. Through the said program, applicants make a donation that will be directed to the construction of affordable housing for Saint Kittians and Nevisians.

The Iberian nation chose another path: taking real estate off the table and focusing entirely on business investment and the support of culturally relevant projects. Now, what does this mean for the applicant?

Mundo introduces four investment paths towards obtaining the Portuguese Golden Visa. Even though they are not real estate-related, they constitute flexible solutions.

Currently open Golden Visa routes

In 2026, the golden visa in Portugal is available to applicants who allocate €500,000 in investment funds, which, for the above-mentioned reasons, cannot be related to real estate. Thus, the government stimulates local businesses and encourages foreign investment by providing eligibility for a 2-year, renewable permit. The main condition is that 60% of the fund is allocated to commercial companies based in Portugal, regardless of their sector or industry (except for real estate).

What is a Golden Visa-qualified investment fund

CMVM regulation (Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários)

Mundo is currently assisting readers with their Golden Visa applications through Portugal investment funds. Luckily, we can provide best-in-class assistance and advice thanks to our reliable Portugal-based partner. The firm has been operating since 2015 under a license from the Securities Commission (Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários, in Portuguese, or simply CMVM).

This ensures a safe path towards a Portuguese visa, allowing investors to become eligible for residency in an EU country.

60%-minimum allocation to Portugal-domiciled companies

Since the program aims to support local businesses, 60% of the funds must be directed to local companies. There aren’t, however, restrictions regarding sectors or industries (except for real estate), as this would be counterproductive in a relatively small country such as Portugal.

Minimum 5-year fund life

After 5 years of investment, participants can apply for permanent residency with the possibility of obtaining citizenship after 10 years

Types of eligible funds in 2026

Mundo partners only with reliable providers, agents, and wealth managers, and this is no exception. With more than 10 years managing investment funds, Mundo’s partner in Portugal provides a safe entry to EU residency by investing in Portugal investment funds.

Next, we describe each of the funds available at the moment of writing, all of which are eligible for the Golden Visa provided the applicant reaches the minimum threshold of €500,000.

Since they are specially designed to meet the program’s requirements, these funds represent a unique opportunity to obtain residency while investing in a stable economy and a reputable country.

Container: Portugal investment fund to help startups and emerging businesses

Main focus

This fund aims to support projects in their early stages, i.e., small and medium enterprises. Focusing on startups that develop AI-based technology, the fund boosts these young projects and helps them thrive inside Portugal and expand beyond the country’s borders.

Objective

Container's main objective is to support scalable businesses across several industries, including sportstech enterprises, SaaS-oriented projects, and AI-based entrepreneurships. The fund includes both Portuguese companies and venture capital from the US and the United Kingdom, maintaining 60% in Portugal to keep it golden-visa-friendly.

Minimum investment

The minimum investment requirement to enter Container is €100,000; nevertheless, to qualify for the Golden Visa, the minimum investment must be €500,000.

Lifecycle

It has a 10-year life cycle and a six-year investment window, after which the investor can collect benefits.

Composition and portfolio

The fund has been dedicated to helping several companies since its establishment in 2023. In the sports tech sector, it is allocated to companies like ZWIM, which provides smart paddle swim training, and Cycling District, an indoor cycling studio with a digital coach located in Porto, committed to helping both amateur and professional cyclists train at home.

In the AI sphere, the fund holds enterprises such as Vertical AI, dedicated to automating grant-giving processes, and Exactly.ai, a machine learning system that reproduces visual styles. The latter is already being deployed by some of the technology giants.

Indexed II: Get residency with a careful approach to risk management

Main focus

Offering investors a defensive strategy focused on capital preservation, Indexed II diversifies capital across stable assets such as gold and commodities, plus Portuguese bonds and private credit. Indexed II derives from a prior fund (Indexed I). As its predecessor, it focuses on a safe approach to risk and a conservative strategy.

Objective

This fund’s objective is to allocate the applicants' funds into low-risk sectors, thus shaping a structure with a solid defensive core covering 80% of the capital. With the composition mainly based on investment-grade bonds and gold-based ETFs, it aims to preserve capital while facilitating access to the Golden Visa.

Minimum investment

The minimum investment is 100,000 euros (500,000 for golden visa applications).

Lifecycle

The fund was created in May 2026 and allows for subscriptions within a 2-year period, ending in May 2028. With a closing date in May 2036, it has a 10-year span and facilitates investment through a 6-year term.

Composition and portfolio

By allocating 60% to Portuguese corporate bonds, paired with EU and US sovereign debt, and 20% in gold and commodities, the fund assures a solid base. Most of the fund is focused on conservative vehicles (with ETFs backed by physical gold), while the remaining 20% is based on private credit to small and medium-sized companies across Portugal, and to solar energy and battery storage providers.

Since 60% of the capital is invested in Portugal, this fund makes the investor eligible for the Golden Visa application.

Orange: based on the world’s most famous digital currency

Main focus

The revolution of digital currencies started with Bitcoin 17 years ago, and now, Bitcoin is your gateway to EU residency. As more cryptocurrencies arise, and as blockchain technology is applied to different sectors, Bitcoin is becoming scarce and, hence, coveted.

Objective

Investing in a highly profitable asset outside of the usual paths can be convenient. Orange, thus, constitutes an excellent opportunity to increase the portfolio's value using a reliable asset, which makes a good alternative to gold or silver. The cold storage facility is insured by Lloyd’s, which takes the edge off when it comes to investing in crypto assets, alleviating risks associated with holding crypto in such facilities.

Minimum investment

The minimum threshold to enter this fund is €100,000, although €500,000 is required to qualify for the Golden Visa in Portugal.

Lifecycle

Orange has a lifecycle of 8 years with an investment window encompassing 5 years. Currently, this is the fund with the fastest closing date, as the subscriptions will end this December.

Composition and portfolio

As explained above, Orange is mainly focused on bitcoin, providing direct ownership through Portuguese funds. With an SPV structure, it targets specific assets and isolates the risk, keeping the capital fenced off from the rest of the portfolio.

Artistic-development-focused fund offering a lower entry

The Portuguese government stipulates a lower entry threshold for applicants who make a €200,000 contribution to pre-approved cultural projects. Considering this, Mundo offers an opportunity to apply through a fund that sponsors Portuguese artists.

The artists are selected each year and offered a dwelling place in Ferreira do Zêzere, where accommodation, living expenses, and production materials are ensured. The goal is for these 8 artists to fully focus on their work for a whole year, without worrying about their livelihoods.

Since it's a donation, it doesn't bring returns, but it does bring the satisfaction of supporting local talent and contributing to the artistic scene in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula.

Combine funds to obtain a Golden Visa

In the table above, the reader can see the minimum investment stipulated for these Portugal investment funds. The minimum threshold is, in all cases, €100,000, while the Golden Visa requires at least €500,000. Applicants can meet this minimum threshold within the same fund or by combining different ones: €100,000 and €400,000, €200,000 and €300,000, €150,000 and €350,000, and so on.

Thanks to this, investors’ choices widen, return potential increases, and the strategy's effectiveness strengthens.

Returns: realistic expectations in 2026

Average returns of Portuguese, EU, and US bonds

Having realistic expectations is vital; hence, it’s important to carefully assess both the possibility of returns and the potential risks regarding this or any investment one makes.

As to past performances, Portuguese corporate bonds have an expected yield ranging from 3.5% to 4.5%, and EU and US sovereign bonds have shown a yield range between 2.5% and 3.5%
